The City of Los Angeles Mayor’s Gang Reduction and Youth Development (GRYD) Comprehensive Strategy operates with a vision to create communities that are healthy, peaceful, and thriving environments. Programming implemented towards this vision falls into four focal areas which include the hosting of community engagement events, contracting with community-based organizations to deliver gang prevention and gang intervention services to young people and emerging adults and their families, and facilitating coordinated responses to gang violence. Taken together, the programs and services provided in these areas strive to achieve GRYD’s mission of improving the health and well-being of community members. GRYD established the Summer Night Lights (SNL) program in 2008 to engage community members of all ages in the evenings throughout the summer months (typically held from late June to the end of August on Wednesday – Saturday) when community violence historically spikes. Currently, the City implements the SNL Program in 44 parks and recreation centers citywide. The SNL program seeks to achieve specific outcomes related to programming delivered and resources provided to communities.
