AI Contract Overview
The Department of Defense’s Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane is seeking to procure Trigger Spark Gaps, specifically part number ZR7512 SPRK GAP, TRIG VAC, 45 KV, through a sole source contract with MPD Components, Inc. The initial order consists of two units, with an option to purchase an additional eight units over the next four years. These specialized components are integral to high-voltage switching applications, notably for critical safety and operational functions within the Aegis Simplified Driver, SPS-49 Radar Klystron microwave tube, and related testing systems. The ZR7512’s unique design as a cold-cathode, vacuum-triggered spark gap makes it essential due to its reliability, performance, and specific compatibility, with no suitable alternatives available without incurring prohibitive costs and risks related to redesign and production delays. This procurement is conducted under FAR 12.201-1 commercial item procedures, with a firm fixed price solicitation issued on May 21, 2026, and responses due by May 29, 2026, at 11:00 PM Eastern Time. The solicitation emphasizes the sole source nature because of the critical and highly specialized nature of the ZR7512 product, produced only by General Electric and supplied through MPD Components, Inc. Interested parties must be registered in SAM and monitor the official government portal for updates or amendments before the closing date. Quotes must be submitted via email to the designated contracting officer, Rose Brown, and only offerors providing quotes will receive any post-closing amendments or be considered for award.

Full Description
N0016426Q0160 – SOLE SOURCE – TRIGGER SPARK GAPS – FSG 5960 – NAICS 334511
ISSUE DATE 21-MAY-2026 – CLOSING DATE 29-MAY-2026 – 11:00 PM Eastern Time
ITEM DESCRIPTION- Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane has a requirement for an initial quantity of two (2) Trigger Spark Gaps, part number ZR7512 SPRK GAP, TRIG VAC, 45 KV with additional options over the next four years to purchase an additional quantity of eight (8) Trigger Spark Gaps. Required delivery is within 22 weeks of award or option exercise.
SOLE SOURCE PROCUREMENT- The proposed contract action is for the supplies or services for which the Government intends to solicit and negotiate with one source only MPD Components, Inc. of Owensboro, Kentucky, Cage Code 33173, under the authority of FAR 12.201-1 for commercial items using simplified procedures. This is being solicited on a sole source only basis because the ZR7512 is a cold-cathode, vacuum-triggered spark gap designed for high-voltage switching applications. It is a General Electric product, part of the ZR-series triggered vacuum gaps, and is used in systems requiring rapid, high-current switching of stored energy. The ZR7512 combines the wide voltage range and reliability of vacuum gaps with the ease of triggering of gas gaps. It is suitable for non-repetitive high-current pulses with minimal delay and jitter, making it ideal for fault protection and energy discharge. The ZR7512 Triggered Spark Gap is a mission-critical safety and operational component that provides essential high-voltage and high-current protection for the Aegis Simplified Driver (SDR), the SPS-49 Radar Klystron microwave tube, associated testing infrastructure, and operating personnel. Extensive market and engineering analysis confirms that no other triggered spark gap possesses the necessary specifications to seamlessly integrate into the current architecture. Attempting to procure and integrate a substitute component is both technically and financially prohibitive; it would necessitate a major, highly costly engineering redesign of the larger assembly and introduce unacceptable risks to the production schedule, quality, and reliability of future Microwave Tube (MWT) manufacturing. All responsible sources may submit a capability statement, which shall be considered by the agency. However, a determination by the Government not to compete with this proposed contract based upon responses to this solicitation is solely within the discretion of the Government. Information received will normally be considered solely for the purpose of determining whether to conduct a competitive procurement.
