NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) plans to enter into a non-reimbursable Space Act Agreement (SAA) with a newly created non-profit organization, the Maryland Science, Education, and Exploration Center at Goddard, Inc. (MDSEEC), to conduct preliminary planning for a potential new Science, Education, and Exploration Center (SEEC) located at or near GSFC. This initial phase involves developing a business plan and conducting site analyses to determine feasibility, with no appropriated funds provided to MDSEEC for this work. If the preliminary phase is successful, NASA may pursue a long-term SAA to develop and operate SEEC, also without appropriated funding. SEEC aims to become a premier Mid-Atlantic destination showcasing NASA and Goddard’s scientific and educational endeavors, offering dynamic, interactive experiences and programs beyond traditional exhibits to connect the public, students, and educators with current NASA activities. The envisioned SEEC facility would replace the existing visitors center and function as a self-sustaining non-profit entity. Its mission includes fostering engagement through innovative educational approaches and highlighting Goddard’s contributions in real time, making it a unique educational venue. Interested parties were invited to express their interest and capabilities by March 10, 2009. The agreement supports NASA’s broader outreach and education goals by potentially establishing a landmark institution that brings NASA’s work directly to the community and visitors, thereby enhancing public understanding and appreciation of space science and exploration.
