Fort Detrick is continuing its Young Engineers and Scientists (YES) summer program, which uses a Near-Peer mentorship approach to engage middle, high school, and college students in STEM education. Near-Peer mentors, who are typically high school or early college students, guide middle school interns through hands-on science and engineering activities. This initiative aims to inspire younger students by connecting them with mentors closer to their age, fostering interest in science and engineering fields. The program operates under an existing Memorandum of Agreement between the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, Hood College, and Frederick County Public Schools, facilitating collaboration among public and private educational institutions in Frederick County. The contract notice indicates a sole source intent to continue awarding the 2010 YES program to Hood College. Hood College will prepare Near-Peer mentors with the necessary tools and curricula to effectively teach interns during on-campus laboratory summer internships. These internships not only provide students with practical experience but also allow USAMRMC and USAG scientists to engage directly with students and educators, further supporting STEM education and inspiring future college aspirations. Due to the established MOA, no other education providers will be solicited for this contract, ensuring continuity and leveraging existing partnerships.
