UK Obesity Research Institute: full application

The Medical Research Council (MRC), under UK Research and Innovation, is soliciting applications to establish the UK Obesity Research Institute (UK-ORI). This national, scalable research institute will be structured around a director-led central hub and partner research sites, focusing on the mechanistic biomedical drivers of obesity and related conditions, such as cardiometabolic disease. The scope of work encompasses fundamental biology, medicine, and technology, as well as translational and experimental medicine for target validation. A specific component funded by the BHF will address obesity-driven cardiovascular risk. The initiative is designed for an initial seven-year funding period, with applicants required to provide a comprehensive seven-year ambition and detailed research plans for the first four years. Evaluation of proposals is based on several critical factors, including the strategic vision, the suitability of the leadership team, and the capability to deliver through host organizations and partnerships. Significant emphasis is placed on research culture, requiring adherence to FAIR data principles, open research practices, and MRC data sharing policies. Applicants must also demonstrate a commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), fair performance assessments aligned with DORA principles, and the integration of meaningful public engagement. The institute will also support capacity building through the potential for up to two studentships per year, totaling 14 over the award duration.
