The University of Calgary is seeking to procure a TA Instruments Discovery DSC250 Differential Scanning Calorimeter from Waters Limited to upgrade the Civil Engineering laboratory. This acquisition includes the primary unit along with an Academic Support Plan, Tzero Press and Die Sets Kit, and specialized installation and training provided by Thermal and Rubotherm. The equipment is intended to replace an aging DSC Q100 and is essential for research on bituminous materials, such as modified asphalt and material ageing, which require high measurement sensitivity and signal separation to detect overlapping thermal events. According to the technical assessment, the Discovery DSC 250 is the only system capable of meeting the university's specific mandatory requirements for heat-flow measurement, modulation, and workflow compatibility. This pre-solicitation notice, identified by solicitation number AB-2026-06618, was posted on October 1, 2026, with a response deadline of October 8, 2026. The procurement is being managed by Senior Procurement Specialist Ling Li for performance in Alberta.

Full Description

The University of Calgary (UCalgary) intends to purchase a TA Instruments Discovery DSC250 Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) from Waters Limited, including Thermal and Rubotherm Installation & Training, Tzero® Press and Die Sets Kit, and Academic Support Plan. The equipment is required by the University’s Civil Engineering laboratory to replace an aging DSC Q100 and to support research involving bituminous materials, including neat and modified asphalt materials, asphalt modifiers, and material ageing. These materials can exhibit weak, broad, or overlapping thermal events. The laboratory requires a DSC capable of delivering measurement sensitivity, baseline performance, signal separation, and compatibility necessary to support the laboratory’s current and future research program. Based on the technical assessment completed by the laboratory, the TA Instruments Discovery DSC 250 is the only known system currently capable of meeting the University’s complete combination of mandatory performance, heat-flow measurement, modulation, compatibility, and workflow requirements.
