Full Description

The University of Calgary requires one fully integrated, containerized solar microgrid system designed for deployment in Northern Alberta’s cold climate conditions (Maximum load should be ~15000 lb that could be moved by a regular truck). The minimum technical specifications include, however may not be limited to: A. Container Unit • One mobile unit either build on platform directly (Figure A), or insulated 20’/40’ shipping container (please propose optimal size based on system design). • Insulation must be suitable for extreme cold weather conditions (Northern Alberta climate). • Container must house all electrical components, battery storage, and control systems in a secure, weatherproof, and ventilated environment. B. Solar Photovoltaic (PV) System • 10-20 rooftop solar panels, rated 400W–500W each. • Panels may be fixed (Figure B) or expandable (Figure A) to optimize for seasonal sun angles and potential redeployment. • Include all required mounting hardware, wiring, and combiner boxes. • A remote data acquisition and monitoring system for research purposes. C. Battery Energy Storage System • Capacity: 40 kWh usable energy, 5 kW continuous output. • Provide pricing and technical comparison for: o Flooded lead-acid (FLA) battery bank o Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery system o Other cost-effective alternatives (e.g., advanced lead-carbon, etc.) • Include battery management system (BMS), safety disconnects, and ventilation if required D. Control and Electrical Panel • Integrated control panel with all AC/DC wiring, breakers, surge protection, and metering. • Capability to accept grid or generator input for temporary charging of batteries. • System must support hybrid operation (solar + grid/generator) with automatic transfer switching. • Include remote monitoring capability (IoT/web-based platform preferred). E. Optional Components • Flatbed mover for container relocation (Figure B) • Transportation from fabrication site to University of Calgary.
