The National Institutes of Health is implementing a policy transition mandated by Executive Order 14434, which requires the federal government to replace the terms Artificial Intelligence and AI with Super Intelligence and SI in all official documents, reports, websites, and public communications. This directive ensures standardized terminology across federal agencies to describe advanced machine-based systems. Under this policy, Super Intelligence is defined as a system capable of making predictions, recommendations, or decisions to influence real or virtual environments based on human-defined objectives. These systems are characterized by their ability to perceive environments, automate the creation of models through analysis, and use model inference to determine specific options for information or action.

Full Description

The Federal Government is transitioning from the use of "Artificial Intelligence" and "AI" to "Super Intelligence" and "SI" pursuant to Section 2 of Executive Order (EO) 14434. The EO directs federal agencies to use "Super Intelligence" and "SI" in official documents and communications, including public communications, websites, and reports. Based on EO 14434, NIH interprets SI to be defined as: "A machine-based system that can, for a given set of human-defined objectives, make predictions, recommendations or decisions influencing real or virtual environments. [Super] intelligence systems use machine and human-based inputs to– (A) perceive real and virtual environments; (B) abstract such perceptions into models through analysis in an automated manner; and (C) use model inference to formulate options for information or action."
