The project titled Where the Mirror Breaks: Detecting Bone Metastases Through Symmetry-Based Artificial Intelligence, identified by solicitation number OCENW.XS26.1.253, focuses on improving the detection and measurement of bone metastasis. Funded by the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek under the agency Exacte en Natuurwetenschappen, the initiative addresses the challenges of manually outlining tumors on medical scans, which often complicates treatment evaluation and the development of new therapies for advanced cancer patients. The core objective is to develop an artificial intelligence system that utilizes the body's natural symmetry to identify abnormal changes by comparing the left and right sides of the skeleton. By automating the detection process and removing the need for manual outlining, this technology aims to provide an objective method for monitoring disease progression. This advancement is expected to accelerate drug development and enhance overall patient care by providing more accurate and efficient diagnostic tools.

Full Description

When cancer spreads to the bones, it often causes pain, fractures, and poor outcomes, while being difficult to measure on medical scans. This makes it harder to evaluate treatments and develop new therapies. This project develops a new artificial intelligence that detects bone metastasis without manually outlining tumors. Instead, it compares the left and right sides of the skeleton, using the body’s symmetry to identify abnormal changes. By providing an objective and automated way to detect and measure bone metastases, this approach aims to improve treatment evaluation, accelerate drug development, and ultimately improve care for patients with advanced cancer.
