AI Contract Overview
Under solicitation NASA-SBIR-158767, Remcom is developing a comprehensive end-to-end modeling and simulation solution for wireless propagation and network coverage in lunar environments. This Phase II SBIR effort builds upon Phase I achievements, such as lunar terrain importing, to integrate advanced capabilities into the Wireless InSite commercial application. The project focuses on three primary use cases: surface-to-surface connectivity between habitats and rovers, space-to-ground links for orbital assets, and interference analysis for radio astronomy equipment. Key technical objectives include creating a graphical user interface for lunar material parameters, enhancing diffuse scattering models for subsurface rocks in regolith, and implementing accelerated ray-tracing for curved, rugged terrain to increase analysis speed by an order of magnitude. The scope of work also includes the development of link-level post-processing tools to analyze the impact of multipath delay spread and Doppler effects on communication systems. These enhancements will provide NASA with a critical predictive tool for planning the placement of 4G/5G towers and relays in difficult-to-reach lunar regions. The contract is a total small business set-aside performed in Cleveland, Ohio, and will culminate in the delivery of a final research report and a beta version of the enhanced Wireless InSite software.

Full Description
Benefits: The ultimate outcome of this SBIR will be an enhanced version of the Wireless InSite simulation product, incorporating new data and algorithms for handling lunar materials, the unique terrain, and the impact of multipath fading, delay spread, and Doppler to communications. Given the challenges of lunar channel modeling and measurement, this will provide a valuable predictive tool for understanding the channel, planning placement of 4G/5G towers and relays, and estimating connectivity to difficult-to-reach regions. The following new features in Wireless InSite will be directly applicable to commercial and government terrestrial studies as well as lunar studies: Accelerated, end-to-end path discovery and processing for faster analysis of scenarios with longer ranges over rugged terrain. Interactions with curved surfaces Extensions for post-processing for link-level analysis
