Sandia National Laboratories is advancing the development of compact systems that integrate microfluidics, microarray discrimination, and imaging technologies to enable efficient preparation, binding, and detection of target biomolecules. These systems aim to rapidly identify biomolecules such as gene sequences and proteins from a wide range of biological sources including viruses, bacteria, plants, algae, and mammalian cells. This capability is applicable in diverse sectors including healthcare, food safety, drug testing, and biodefense. Innovations include processes for rapid solubilization of various biological agents, including challenging bacterial spores, facilitating sample preparation for downstream analysis. The integration of microarray and sample preparation technologies has the potential to produce novel devices capable of lysing, concentrating, purifying, and analyzing biological samples. Sandia is seeking industrial partners with the technical expertise and manufacturing capabilities to bring these technologies to market, especially those who can assist with translating successful prototypes into commercial products. Potential collaborations include Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs), which may involve funding to the lab, and commercial licenses granting exclusive rights within defined fields of use, subject to reasonable compensation. Interested companies are encouraged to submit a description of their business and interest by September 15, 2005, to initiate discussions with Sandia’s business representatives about participation and requirements. This opportunity focuses on producing thermal lyser microarray devices suitable for both government and commercial applications.

Full Description

Sandia National Laboratories is working towards developing compact systems that combine microfluidics, microarray discrimination, and microarray imaging to efficiently prepare, bind and detect sample target biomolecules. Rapid discrimination of biomolecules such as gene sequences and proteins originating from viruses, bacteria, plants, algae, and eukaryotes such as mammalian cells is useful in a variety of fields, for example health care, food safety, drug testing and bioweapons defense. Processes that rapidly solubilize a wide variety of biological agents, including difficult to lyse bacterial spores have also been developed to facilitate sample preparation. The combination of our microarray and sample preparation technologies could lead to novel products that allow for the lysis, concentration, purification, and analysis. Sandia National Laboratories is seeking partners to be a part of this exciting effort. Of particular value would be industrial participants with experience in providing a path to market following a successful prototype demonstration. Partnerships may take the form of Cooperative Research & Development Agreements (CRADA) and/ or commercial licenses. Commercial licensees will have the option to obtain, up to and including, an exclusive license to the intellectual property in a pre-negotiated, defined field of use for reasonable compensation. CRADAs are expected to include funds-in to the Lab. If your company has the technical capability and manufacturing capacity to produce these devices for government and commercial applications, and if you wish to pursue this unique opportunity, please email a brief description of your company, your contact information, and your interests in this venture to: contact@example.gov. You will be contacted by a business representative who will discuss the requirements and steps for working with Sandia. Please respond no later than September 15, 2005.
