Caltrans has approved an encroachment permit for Environmental Restoration Group, LLC to install a temporary 6-inch-high sheet-metal barrier inside the culvert of the 101 Freeway at Las Virgenes Creek in Calabasas, Los Angeles County, at postmile 31.36. The barrier is designed to block invasive nonnative crayfish from entering the habitat of the federally listed California red-legged frog, supporting a U.S. Fish and Wildlife initiative to protect and expand the frog’s population in its historic range. Installation will occur only during dry weather conditions, and the barrier must be removed prior to any rainstorm and fully taken down by December 31. No excavation, utility relocation, or acquisition of new right-of-way is required for this project, ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding infrastructure and environment. The project is coordinated through Caltrans District 7 in Los Angeles, with Mojgan Abbassi serving as the primary point of contact.
