Under the authority of the Federal Acquisition Regulation, Part 6, subparts 6.301 and 6.302-1, DARPA intends to contract with Applied Minds, Inc.; 1209 Grand Central Avenue; Glendale, CA 91201, on a sole source basis to evaluate the feasibility and desirability of manufacturing key space structures - in space. These would have applications in creating reflectors, and other optical components for use in the optical or radio spectrums. Assessments of Long-term structural stability, aging, and geometry shift due to solar irradiance, micro-gravity fields, micro-meteor impacts, solar winds, and other potentially disruptive influences. Key personnel include Mr. Bran Ferren's extensive experience as a designer and technologist working in product development, engineering, architecture and the sciences, in addition Dr. W. Daniel Hillis has extensive experience as an inventor, scientist, author and engineer, which make them uniquely qualified for this advisory function. Any response to this notice must show clear and convincing evidence that competition would be advantageous to the government. In doing so, interested sources must submit technical capabilities, pricing, and other information that demonstrates their ability to meet DARPA's needs. This synopsis is not to be considered a request for quotations or proposals. No solicitation document is available and telephone requests will not be honored. No contract will be awarded on the basis of offers received in response to this notice, but offers will be used to determine if a comparable source is available and more advantageous to the government. If no affirmative written response is received within 30 days from the publication of this synopsis, a contract may be issued to Applied Minds, Inc. without further notice.
