This contract amendment modifies a previous Broad Agency Announcement related to revolutionary guidance and ordnance technology, specifically updating the research focus on subterranean platforms. The objective is to identify, develop, and integrate key enabling technologies for an autonomous device capable of burrowing in at least one soil type chosen by the offeror. The initiative targets near-term technology demonstrations while supporting long-term systems planning. Critical technology areas of interest include high energy density unconventional power sources, stealthy, potentially biologically-inspired digging mechanisms for subterranean propulsion, and navigation methods adapted to underground environments. Expertise in optimized auger design and soil mechanics is also sought to enhance the technological approach. The contract provides designated technical points of contact within the Air Force Research Laboratory Munitions Directorate to facilitate communication and support for prospective offerors. Janice K. Jones and Donna A. Moran serve as the contract specialists for administrative matters related to the solicitation. The announcement was initially posted in January 2004 under solicitation number BAA-MNK-04-0002 and represents a presolicitation opportunity aligned with advancing novel underground autonomous systems through focused technology development.
