C--LHA(R) SHIP FUNCTIONAL DESIGN SUPPORT

The Naval Sea Systems Command plans to award a sole source contract to Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, Inc. (NGSS) for functional design support of the LHA(R) Amphibious Assault Ship, which will replace the existing LHA Class Amphibious Assault ships. The scope of work encompasses functional design support, integrated logistics support, and the development and refinement of ship specifications. Key focus areas include maneuvering, sea keeping and motion analysis, compartment arrangements, propulsion and machinery systems, warfare and mission systems, navigation, alternative total ship designs, protection, signature control, and strategies to reduce ownership costs. This contract is set for Fiscal Year 2003 with options to extend support through Fiscal Years 2004 to 2006. NGSS is uniquely qualified for this contract as the sole designer and builder of all previous LHA and LHD Class Amphibious Assault ships, and is currently commencing construction on LHD 8. Their extensive experience and proprietary knowledge of these ships position them to meet the contract requirements effectively.
