The State University of New York (SUNY) has awarded a single-source contract to SESAC (Society of European Stage Authors and Composers) for a blanket license covering the licensing of copyrighted musical works from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2029. This license is mandatory under Copyright Law to enable SUNY to publicly perform copyrighted music legally. Since only three entities in the U.S. administer such licenses, there is no opportunity for price negotiations, making SESAC the designated sole provider. Utilizing this blanket license is a cost-effective and efficient solution compared to obtaining individual licenses from each copyright holder for every song performed. The contract, titled C004321, is set to run across all New York State counties and is valued between $500,000 and $2,000,000. The notice was posted on August 20, 2025, with a response deadline of August 27, 2025. The contract is managed by Erik Finkell, the Contract Administrator, and is designated as a procurement exempt from advertising due to its sole-source nature. This arrangement ensures SUNY remains compliant with copyright laws while streamlining licensing costs for musical performances across the state.
