This project involves the reconstruction and replacement of a damaged 2,871-foot-long, ABA accessible raised timber boardwalk trail within a sensitive environmental area in Death Valley, California. The work includes removing remnants of the previous damaged structure, reconstructing the trail following a new alignment due to recent flood events, and upgrading related infrastructure such as the trailhead parking lot and a 400-foot roadway section with a special rock embankment. The project emphasizes environmental protection, requiring paleontological monitoring, limited equipment use, and careful planning to minimize disturbance in natural and cultural resource areas. The scope of work encompasses extensive timber and concrete construction, debris removal via helicopter, embankment building, and installation of amenities like a vault toilet. Scheduled to be advertised in September 2024 with construction planned from November 2024 to June 2025, the project is estimated to cost between $5 million and $10 million. It is set aside exclusively for small businesses under a total small business set-aside program, with a focus on firms experienced in similar large-scale projects within protected environments such as national parks or forests. The contract is managed by the Department of Transportation’s Central Federal Lands Division, with the primary point of contact being Kelly Palmer. The project aims to restore a critical recreational and interpretive trail while adhering to strict environmental and operational constraints.

Prior experience on projects of similar magnitude within National Parks, National Forests, or similar environments is required.
