The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control is seeking investigator-initiated research proposals to establish National Centers of Excellence in Youth Violence Prevention. These centers will focus on expanding the evidence base for preventing violence among youth aged 10 to 24, specifically targeting communities where violence rates exceed the national average. The primary goal is to implement and rigorously evaluate at least two distinct prevention approaches that address priority research areas to reduce youth violence. The program is structured around four core elements: maintaining strong administrative capacity for implementation and dissemination, conducting rigorous research and evaluation, fostering community collaboration through local partnerships and youth advisory councils, and providing training and education for early career researchers. Managed by the Department of Health and Human Services, this initiative emphasizes the translation of research into practical community applications to effectively curb youth violence.

Full Description

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) seeks investigator-initiated research proposals to expand the evidence base for the prevention of violence among youth aged 10 to 24 years.

The purpose of this announcement is to fund the National Centers of Excellence in Youth Violence Prevention (or Youth Violence Prevention Centers; YVPCs) to continue to build the evidence-base for youth violence prevention approaches, build strong community collaboration and engagement to inform the research, and support training for early career researchers.  The proposed YVPCs should focus activities on communities with rates of youth violence that are higher than the national average.

The YVPCs will address four core elements: 1) Administrative Capacity: YPCS should establish a strong administrative infrastructure within the YVPC to support the effective implementation and evaluation of prevention approaches and the translation and dissemination of results. 2) Research and Rigorous Evaluation: YVPCs should conduct a rigorous evaluation of at least two distinct violence prevention approaches. These approaches must address at least two of the priority research areas specified in the funding announcement to reduce rates of youth violence in the selected communities. 3) Collaboration and Engagement: YVPCs should foster partnerships with local organizations and individuals who can provide insights and guidance to inform prevention and research activities. They should actively engage in efforts to share knowledge and collaborate on youth violence prevention efforts and establish a youth advisory council in each intervention community. 4) Training and Education: YVPCs should integrate training activities for early career researchers in youth violence prevention. These activities should complement the YVPC’s implementation, evaluation, and research efforts and foster collaboration and engagement.

Improving Protection against Influenza and Other Respiratory Pathogens: the US Flu VE NetworkThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is seeking applicants to sustain and expand the US Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness Network, which aims to generate critical data on the effectiveness of influenza and other respiratory pathogen vaccines across all age groups. The initiative requires proposing work under four interconnected components: annual vaccine effectiveness and correlates of protection surveillance through active outpatient enrollment and systematic pathogen testing; electronic surveillance for acute respiratory illness and vaccine effectiveness; household transmission research; and immunogenicity studies. Applicants must apply for either Component A or Component B, but not both, with the option to add Component C or D as supplementary proposals. Component A focuses on direct surveillance and is anticipated to fund up to five sites at $1,800,000 annually, while Component B supports coordination and surge capacity with one site funded at the same level. Optional Component C, focused on household transmission, may be awarded to up to two Component A sites at $100,000 annually, and optional Component D for immunogenicity research may be granted to up to three sites from either Component A or B at $750,000 annually. The opportunity is open through a forecasted notice issued by the Department of Health and Human Services, with point of contact information provided for inquiries.

Expanded Surveillance for Pediatric Infectious DiseasesThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is seeking to establish a network of U.S. institutions to conduct standardized, prospective surveillance of pediatric acute respiratory illness and acute gastroenteritis, with a focus on identifying and characterizing respiratory and enteric viruses among children seeking medical care. The core requirement involves active surveillance in inpatient and emergency department settings, following CDC-established protocols to enroll patients based on standardized symptom criteria and confirm viral infections using approved molecular assays. This foundational component will generate critical data on hospitalization rates, disease progression, and the effectiveness of prevention tools such as vaccines for influenza, rotavirus, and respiratory syncytial virus. Optional components allow recipients to extend surveillance to outpatient clinics and conduct supplementary research on immune response to infection and immunization, enhancing the depth of biological and epidemiological insights. The network’s findings are intended to directly inform public health policy, improve diagnostic and treatment guidelines, and shape recommendations for prevention products to reduce the burden of viral illness in children. Outcomes will support evidence-based strategies to lower healthcare utilization and hospitalizations among pediatric populations. Applications must include the core component, with the option to add one or more supplementary components to expand scope. The opportunity is posted under the title Expanded Surveillance for Pediatric Infectious Diseases, classified under NAICS code 541715, with point of contact available through the CDC for procedural inquiries. The funding opportunity is forecasted for release in July 2026, targeting institutions capable of sustained, high-quality clinical data collection and analysis in alignment with national public health priorities.
