AI Contract Overview
The Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence: Development Phase (COBRE-D) program, administered by the National Institutes of Health under the Department of Health and Human Services, is designed to enhance biomedical research capacity in states that have historically received limited NIH funding. This initiative targets institutions in these states by providing financial support focused on broad scientific areas where they lack sufficient infrastructure or expertise. The program aims to foster a long-term institutional vision by aiding the recruitment and mentoring of early-career investigators, bolstering research facilities, and improving research administration services. COBRE-D funding serves as a critical stepping stone for less-resourced institutions, enabling them to build foundational biomedical research capabilities. It supplements start-up packages for new hires and supports developmental efforts that prepare institutions to advance to the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence Expansion and Sustainability Phases (COBRE E/S). The program’s strategic intent is to empower these institutions to grow their scientific expertise and infrastructure, thereby improving their competitiveness in securing future NIH funding opportunities. Contact for the program is provided through Dr. Federico Bernal, Ph.D., and additional details are accessible via the official grants.gov portal.

Full Description
The NIGMS Institutional Development Awards (IDeA) program supports biomedical research capacity building in states that have historically received low levels of NIH funding. The Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence: Development Phase (COBRE-D) program provides funding to enable institutions in IDeA states to increase their biomedical research capacity in broad scientific areas of strategic importance to them but for which they have limited existing infrastructure or expertise. COBRE-D is intended to support a long-term institutional vision focused on the recruitment and mentoring of early-career investigators by supplementing start-up packages for new hires, the establishment of research facilities, and enhancement of research administration support services. This program serves as an on-ramp for less-resourced institutions to the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence: Expansion/Sustainability Phases (COBRE E/S) program.
