The Collaborative Research project titled Foundations of Computing with Nanobridge Josephson Junctions, funded by the National Science Foundation, aims to develop a scalable computing framework using nano-scale superconducting switches. By focusing on cryogenic electronics, the project seeks to overcome the density and fabrication limitations of conventional systems to create devices that are faster, more energy-efficient, and smaller. The initiative employs a comprehensive end-to-end approach that integrates materials science, device design, circuit development, and software tool support to accelerate the transition from theoretical concepts to real-world systems. The technical scope involves investigating how nanoscale geometry and materials affect device behavior through simulation and experimental characterization, which will then inform the creation of robust logic cells and standardized libraries for electronic design automation. Beyond the technical deliverables, the project will produce training materials and establish a collaborative forum for researchers from diverse backgrounds to foster innovation in the field. Ultimately, the goal is to demonstrate that simplified superconducting devices can provide the necessary infrastructure for advanced quantum and cryogenic sensing systems.

Full Description

Today’s computers are beginning to fall short of what we need for the next generation of science and technology. From designing new medicines and materials to securing information and capturing images of distant galaxies, many important problems require systems that are faster, use less energy, and can make more precise measurements than what we have today. Current technologies struggle to do all of these things at once, which is why new kinds of devices are needed. The challenge is that building new technologies usually takes a very long time—often decades—because progress happens in incremental steps. This project aims to speed things up by designing devices that are simpler to build, smaller in size, and still very powerful. The key focus is on electronics that operate at extremely cold temperatures, known as cryogenic electronics. These systems behave differently from everyday electronics and can offer major advantages in speed and energy use, opening the door to entirely new capabilities rather than just small improvements. In addition, this project will create training materials to help people from different technical backgrounds to learn about this emerging field. It will also be a forum for discussion among researchers with diverse technical backgrounds. Ultimately, the goal is to create a clear path for turning new ideas for devices into real-world systems that can benefit society. This project seeks to establish a scalable computing framework based on nano-scale superconducting switches (nanobridge, or Dayem bridge, Josephson junctions) to overcome the density and fabrication limitations of conventional superconducting electronics, with the goal of achieving significantly higher integration density through a simplified fabrication process. The project combines device design, circuit development, and software tool support in a unified approach: it will first investigate how nanoscale geometry and materials influence device behavior through simulation and experimental characterization and then use these insights to design and optimize robust logic cells and circuits using a technology-optimized signal encoding. These designs will be fabricated and tested to validate performance, while corresponding models and standardized libraries will be integrated into existing electronic design automation workflows to enable larger system design. Throughout the project, feedback between fabrication and design will be used to improve performance and reliability, alongside the development of methods to manage variability and detect or correct errors. This end-to-end approach—from materials and devices to circuits and design tools—aims to (1) demonstrate that simpler superconducting devices can deliver energy-efficient, scalable computing for quantum and cryogenic sensing systems, and (2) establish a generalizable, cross-layer design methodology that accelerates innovation beyond current fabrication limits. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.

STATE OF THE ART (SOTA) MICROELECTRONICS (ME) ADOPTION BROAD AGENCY ANNOUNCEMENT (BAA) FULL TEXT GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENT
Solicitation # 26S1358
The U.S. Department of the Air Force, through SAF/AQC, is issuing a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) numbered 26-S-1358 to advance the adoption of state-of-the-art microelectronics across national security missions. This BAA does not solicit proposals directly but serves as an umbrella framework for future Topic Calls published on SAM.gov and the Classified IC-ARC, which will define specific technical requirements, submission deadlines, and evaluation criteria. The initiative focuses on accelerating the development and integration of trusted, assured microelectronics technologies, particularly those leveraging Intel 18A process nodes and advanced packaging via Secure Enclave, to ensure enduring technological superiority. Five key mission areas are highlighted: advanced secure microelectronics design and production; next-generation assembly, packaging, and test; novel microelectronics for disruptive capabilities; advanced test, validation, and mission qualification; and building an accessible, affordable, and sustainable domestic microelectronics ecosystem. Topics range from AI/ML architectures and radiation-hardened designs to chiplet-based systems, secure test methodologies, edge computing, RF electronics, PNT resilience, digital twins, and open-standard chiplet libraries. Proposals or White Papers may only be submitted in response to individual Topic Calls, which may be either closed (with fixed deadlines) or open (accepting submissions continuously during a defined window), and may follow one-step or two-step processes. Awards, if made, will take the form of procurement contracts or Other Transaction Agreements (OTAs) for prototyping, follow-on production, or experimental purposes, with eligibility open to small businesses, traditional and non-traditional defense contractors, and research institutions. OTA awards require resource-sharing commitments and participation by nontraditional contractors, small businesses, or third-party funding. Proposals must not include classified information unless explicitly directed by a classified Topic Call, which may require SECRET or higher clearances and approved secure facilities. Data rights are anticipated to include Government Purpose Rights for technical data and software, with specific terms negotiated per call. All submissions must reference the BAA number 26-S-1358 and be aligned with the specified Areas of Interest in each Topic Call. Interested parties must actively monitor SAM.gov and IC-ARC for updates, as Topic Calls may be issued throughout the BAA’s open period—initially one year, extendable annually—and any associated costs for proposal development are considered indirect, not chargeable to resulting contracts.
