This project, titled Do echo chambers exist only online? Examining exposure diversity on television and political polarization, is an award notice issued by the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek under the Sociale en Geesteswetenschappen agency. The research aims to determine if echo chambers persist in offline media by analyzing television news consumption patterns using multimodal classification systems that incorporate visual and video features. By measuring exposure diversity in broadcast media, the study seeks to identify correlations between offline news diets and indicators of democratic citizenship, specifically focusing on surveillance knowledge and political polarization. This initiative addresses a significant gap in current academic literature by extending the study of echo chambers from digital platforms to traditional television media.

Full Description

Echo chambers are often studied in online environments, yet offline media consumption remains crucial for understanding polarization. This project investigates whether echo chambers exist in offline news consumption by examining television news diets through multimodal classification systems that leverage visual and video features. Building on observed consumption data already collected, the study measures exposure diversity in television news. The analysis explores relationships between offline media consumption patterns and democratic citizenship measures, including political polarization and surveillance knowledge. This research addresses a critical gap in polarization studies by extending echo chamber theory beyond digital platforms to traditional broadcast media.

A Study on Vessel Design Challenge
Solicitation # 693JF726R000016
The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD), through its Maritime Environmental and Technical Assistance (META) program, is issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP No. 693JF726R000016) for a Vessel Design Challenge. The initiative seeks to fund multiple design teams to develop integrated vessel designs that significantly improve fuel efficiency, targeting a 30 percent improvement, and reduce underwater radiated noise (URN). This is a design-stage challenge focusing on technical feasibility and economic achievability through fluid dynamic modeling rather than direct measurement. Total available funding is up to 1.25 million dollars, with individual cooperative agreements intended to range between 150,000 and 450,000 dollars for projects lasting 12 to 18 months. Eligible applicants include domestic entities, with a preference for U.S.-based companies or those operating under the U.S. flag. The program is open to various commercially useful vessel designs, though it specifically excludes small watercraft, recreational vessels, fisheries vessels, and passenger catamarans used for whale-watching. Ideal design teams should adopt a design-build approach, incorporating naval architects, marine engineers, shipyards, and technology providers. Proposals are limited to 20 pages and must include a detailed design integration plan, modeling methodologies, a justifiable budget, and a comprehensive return on investment analysis. Final deliverables consist of a preliminary vessel design and a report on lessons learned, while sensitive proprietary design data will remain confidential.

Solicitation # ED-GRANTS-101526-002
The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) is soliciting cooperative agreements under the Transformative Research in Special Education Grants program (ALN 84.324T) to develop innovative solutions for improving preservice teacher education systems. The primary objective is to enhance the attraction, training, and retention of preK-12 general and special education teachers to improve outcomes for students with or at risk for disabilities. Phase 1 of the program focuses on creating transformative solutions and gathering evidence at the system, educator, and student levels, with a potential two-year Phase 2 extension to connect these activities to specific education outcomes. The maximum award for a Phase 1 project is 3.75 million dollars over three years, with a possible start date of July 1, 2027. Applications must be submitted as a single PDF file by December 11, 2026, and must include a project narrative and several required appendices, including an Engagement and Dissemination Plan, a Data Sharing and Management Plan, and alignment with SEER 27. Evaluation is based on a scientific peer review process focusing on transformative potential and scientific merit, as well as programmatic factors such as research security compliance and the ability to execute the proposed work. Key personnel are required to have persistent identifiers, such as ORCID, and must complete research security training. The selection process prioritizes applications that address significant problems in preservice teacher education and demonstrate a high potential for dramatic improvement in educator and student outcomes.
