Garberville Community Hospital and Medical Office Building Project

The Southern Humboldt Community Healthcare District is undertaking the Garberville Community Hospital and Medical Office Building Project in Humboldt County, California. The new facility will replace the existing Jerold Phelps Community Hospital and Southern Humboldt Community Clinic, though the existing Skilled Nursing Unit will remain at the current Cedar Street location. The project includes a critical-access hospital of approximately 32,808 square feet and medical office space of approximately 16,920 square feet, designed to provide expanded acute care, emergency room services, imaging, lab, and pharmacy capabilities, as well as support for local elective surgical procedures. The project is currently in the environmental review and approval phase, with an Initial Study and Mitigated Negative Declaration conducted in October 2025 to ensure compliance with regulations regarding aesthetics, biological resources, and transportation. Key administrative details include a public review period from October 13 to November 13, 2025, and a public hearing scheduled for November 20, 2025. Site specifications require 31 public parking spaces, including ADA-compliant and electric vehicle charging stations. Contractors must adhere to OSHA excavation and trench safety standards and meet specific Environmental Professional qualifications. Project oversight is managed by Chief Operations Officer Kent Scown and project manager Megan Marruffo, with coordination from Caltrans to ensure driveway safety near the Highway 101 southbound onramp.
