AI Contract Overview
The National Institutes of Health (NIH), specifically the Clinical Center’s Department of Perioperative Medicine (DPM), intends to negotiate a sole source contract with Baxter Healthcare for the purchase and upgrade of surgical table positioning equipment. The DPM, responsible for supporting clinical and surgical research through its 11 operating rooms and recovery units, identifies the existing positioning equipment as critical but increasingly prone to breakdowns, posing patient safety risks. Due to the specialized nature of the equipment, which must be compatible with the department’s specific surgical tables, the acquisition is deemed a sole source requirement under federal regulations allowing non-competitive procurement when only one supplier can fulfill the needs. The notice clarifies this is not a request for proposals but invites any responsible sources to submit capability statements by June 2, 2026, for government consideration. The decision to proceed without competition remains at the government’s discretion following the review of any responses. The procurement is cataloged under NAICS code 325412, and the contracting activity falls under the Department of Health and Human Services, with all related activities and performance centered in Bethesda, Maryland. The urgency and specificity of the equipment highlight the importance of maintaining patient safety and research quality within NIH’s surgical facilities.
