AI Contract Overview
Beyond Photonics is developing the Wind Beyond lidar system under NASA solicitation NASA-SBIR-158431 to provide high-performance wind profiling for Advanced Air Mobility integration and aviation safety. The system utilizes in-band-pumped Er:YAG laser crystals operating at a 1645 nm wavelength, achieving a transmitter figure of merit approximately ten times larger than typical commercial Er:fiber systems. This technology enables reliable wind measurements at near-horizontal ranges of 20 to 30 kilometers with speed resolutions better than 1 m/s, directional resolution of 5 degrees, and vertical altitude increments of less than 5 meters. The system is designed as a Class 1M eye-safe device that significantly increases measurement volume and update rates compared to existing low-performance lidars. The Phase II technical objectives focus on creating a high-performance compact prototype transceiver unit using a master oscillator and power amplifier configuration. Key development goals include the creation of a rugged, lightweight transceiver module capable of maintaining internal alignment in outdoor environments and the implementation of automated assembly processes to reduce manufacturing costs. Beyond the primary wind profiling application, the technology supports the measurement of methane and water vapor concentrations for greenhouse gas research and has potential applications for DoD laser remote sensing to identify and track hard targets. The project is managed by the NASA SBIR/STTR Program and is designated as a total small business set-aside.

Full Description
Benefits: NASA applications of the compact Doppler lidar include supporting Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) integration by providing 3D winds over large areas for aviation safety and management. Modified versions of the product will also allow for methane and water vapor measurements which will find application in NASA greenhouse gas concentration and flux measurement systems. The lidar technology can be used from airborne and eventually space-based platforms supporting NASA space-based 3D winds program. The long measurement range wind lidar will have significant application in wind energy and aviation safety. Airborne versions will allow for leak detection along methane gas pipelines. Compact transmitters optimized for heterodyne detection lidar will find use in DoD laser remote sensing applications that involve identifying and tracking hard targets.
