Murray Field Airport Sea Level Rise Planning and Economic Study

The California State Coastal Conservancy is initiating a comprehensive study to develop adaptation strategies for sea level rise at Murray Field Airport in Eureka, California, along with an accompanying economic analysis. The study will examine the economic impacts of sea level rise, flooding, and groundwater challenges, while evaluating flooding potential and prevention measures, consistency with surrounding land use, environmental consequences of future development, and alignment with community objectives. Data collection and review of current and projected drivers will inform the analysis, including an assessment of existing environmental documents. At least one distinct adaptation alternative will be developed for each of four strategic approaches: Nature Based, Green/Gray Hybrid, Retreat/Relocate, and Hard Armor, ensuring a broad consideration of viable responses. Community engagement is integral to the study’s development, requiring at least one public workshop, additional community events, and dedicated outreach to airport users, local businesses, and the broader public. Input will also be sought from a technical advisory committee composed of federal, state, and local agencies as well as the Wiyot Tribe, ensuring diverse expertise and cultural perspectives shape the recommendations. The project will be conducted with a strong emphasis on transparency and stakeholder collaboration, with all findings aimed at supporting resilient, equitable, and informed decision-making for the future of Murray Field Airport.
