NIH Director’s Pioneer Award Program (DP1 Clinical Trial Optional)

The NIH Director’s Pioneer Award (RFA-RM-27-001) is a financial assistance grant under the High-Risk, High-Reward Research Program of the NIH Common Fund. It is designed to support exceptionally creative scientists proposing bold, innovative research projects that represent a substantial departure from their current research direction and have the potential to significantly impact the biomedical sciences. The program is open to small businesses and other for-profit organizations, with a project period limited to five years. Each award provides 700,000 dollars in direct costs per year, totaling 3.5 million dollars over the full term, excluding indirect costs. Applications are evaluated through the NIH peer review system based on the significance and innovation of the project, the investigator's capability for past innovation, and the degree to which the proposal represents a fundamental change in research direction. The application process is streamlined, prohibiting the use of preliminary data, specific aims, letters of support, or detailed research plans. Instead, the primary submission is a research strategy structured as an essay. Required documentation includes a one-page facilities statement, a data management and sharing plan, and current and pending support. Applicants must maintain active registrations in SAM.gov, eRA Commons, and Grants.gov. Awardees are also subject to strict cybersecurity incident reporting requirements, necessitating notification of the HHS awarding agency within 48 hours of any discovery.
