AI Contract Overview
Under solicitation NASA-SBIR-33727 and contract NNX15CJ09C, Intelligent Optical System is developing a Non-intrusive Optical Gas Sensor (NIOGS) system to support the International Space Station and future human exploration. This technology utilizes luminescence-based sensing patches and optical fibers to monitor critical life support gas constituents, including pCO2, pH2O, and pO2, as well as trace contaminants. By replacing bulky traditional instrumentation with flexible patches, the system ensures that sensor probes and cables do not restrict human mobility or disturb gas flow within spacesuit prototypes. The project aims to advance the technology from a validated Phase I demonstrator at the Johnson Space Center to a TRL9 system ready for full integration into NASA programs and commercial use. The NIOGS system provides significant benefits to the NASA AES program by facilitating the rapid development of novel EVA systems and improving gas monitoring within Portable Life Support Systems (PLSS). Key deliverables include a complete NIOGS system, a System Requirements Document, and advanced readout units. Beyond aerospace applications, this non-invasive sensing technology has potential commercial markets in industries requiring protective packaging for moisture- or oxygen-sensitive goods, such as pharmaceuticals, electronics, and surgical instruments. This Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) effort is managed by the NASA SBIR/STTR Program and is designated as a total small business set-aside.

Full Description
Benefits: he proposed technology will apply directly to the NASA AES program, facilitating the rapid and effective development of novel EVA systems, and the demonstration of key capabilities for future human missions beyond Earth orbit. In addition, the sensors under development will find direct application for gas monitoring in the PLSS, with potential to overcome problems and failures reported with existing technologies. Potential markets for noninvasive sensor patches include industries that apply protective packaging to moisture- or oxygen-sensitive goods, e.g., electronic components, hygroscopic chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food, and surgical and dental instruments. Incorporating patches inside sample packages will enable them to check gas composition nondestructively throughout the life of the packaged product.
