AI Contract Overview
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, is planning to grant Great Sky Inc., based in Boulder, Colorado, an exclusive license to specific patents and patent applications relating to a "Superconducting Opto-Electronic Transmitter Circuit." These intellectual property rights include a non-provisional patent application filed in 2023, a patent issued in 2026, and a continuation application filed in 2026, all tied to the same technology. The exclusive license would potentially cover worldwide territories but is restricted to the research, development, manufacture, and commercialization of products integrating NIST’s patented technology with Great Sky Inc.'s proprietary technology for artificial intelligence applications. This prospective license will be royalty-bearing and must comply with relevant U.S. laws governing patent licensing, specifically 35 U.S.C. 209 and 37 CFR 404.7. Interested parties have the opportunity to submit written objections or applications for a license within 15 days following the notice’s publication, which was posted on June 12, 2026, with comments due by June 26, 2026. The point of contact for further inquiries includes officials at NIST’s Technology Partnerships Office located in Gaithersburg, Maryland. This license grant represents a significant step toward commercializing advanced superconducting opto-electronic technology with applications in artificial intelligence through a partnership with a private-sector entity.
