AI Contract Overview
Notice of Funding Opportunity PAR-27-090, issued by the National Institutes of Health, invites R01 applications for research on palliative care across the lifespan for individuals with serious illnesses and their care partners. The program supports hypothesis-driven research focusing on palliative care access, use, and quality. Eligible projects include non-clinical trial research, such as health services, methodologic, or observational studies, as well as clinical trials aligned with the NIH Stage Model Stages II through V, covering traditional efficacy, real-world efficacy, effectiveness, and dissemination and implementation. This opportunity is not intended for Stage I research involving new intervention generation or pilot testing; interventions must be in a developed and testable form. Awardees will join the Advancing the Science of Palliative Care Across the Lifespan (ASCENT) Consortium. Applications are evaluated by a Scientific Review Group based on significance, innovation, feasibility, investigator expertise, and institutional environment, with additional considerations for human subject protections, vertebrate animal use, and budget justification. To be eligible, applicant organizations must maintain active registrations in the System for Award Management, eRA Commons, and Grants.gov. Recipients must adhere to strict cybersecurity standards modeled after the NIST framework, including multifactor authentication and a 48-hour incident notification requirement. Clinical trials must be registered on ClinicalTrials.gov and comply with FDA and IRB regulations. Performance is measured via Research Performance Progress Reports, and recipients are required to utilize the NIA CROMS system throughout the grant lifecycle.

Applications may propose hypothesis-driven, milestone-defined palliative care traditional efficacy (Stage II), real-world efficacy (Stage III), effectiveness (Stage IV), and/or dissemination and implementation (Stage V) clinical trials in alignment with the NIH Stage Model (Stages II-V) and relevant Institute or Center policies. Applications may propose non-clinical trial palliative care research, such as health services research, methodologic research, natural experiments, or observational studies. Recipients will become members of the research community facilitated by the NIH-funded Advancing the Science of Palliative Care Across the Lifespan (ASCENT) Consortium.
NOTE: This NOFO is not appropriate for applications proposing new intervention generation, refinement, modification, adaptation, and/or pilot testing (Stage I of the NIH Stage Model) clinical trial research. The intervention(s) to be tested must be in a developed and testable form, with Stage I activities already completed and demonstrated.
