The contract involves the acquisition of a Phoenix M50 instrument along with its associated components and calibration kits to support the Bacteriology Department at U.S. NAMRU SOUTH. This instrument is essential for the continued identification and analysis of drug-resistant pathogens from samples collected at multiple hospital sites in Lima, Iquitos, and other collaborating locations, including Soto-Cano Base in Honduras. The Phoenix M50 is a critical tool for molecular biology and immunology work under IRB-approved protocols, aimed at enhancing research capabilities in antimicrobial resistance detection. Currently, the existing Phoenix M50 instrument, located at JTF-B, is out of service due to aging and costly repair requirements. Replacing this equipment will enable NAMRU SOUTH to maintain its leadership in pathogen research and meet its key institutional objectives. The contract, issued by the Naval Medical Research Center under the Department of Defense, was posted in June 2026 with a responsive deadline shortly thereafter. The procurement includes one Phoenix M50 instrument, a specialized instrument specification kit, a calibrator kit, and a normalizer panel, highlighting the comprehensive nature of the acquisition to ensure optimal functionality and research support.

The Bacteriology Department U.S. NAMRU SOUTH collects large number of samples to identify patterns in drug resistant pathogens. Samples come from multiple Lima and Iquitos hospital sites as well as from other collaborating sites, such as Soto-Cano Base in Honduras, NAMRU SOUTH IRB approved protocols such as NAMRU6.2017.0012; NAMRU6.2013.0024. Performing analysis and tests under mentioned protocols to be able to perform work in molecular biology and immunology is a must.

“Acquiring the Phoenix M50 instrument will continue significantly enhance NAMRU SOUTH’s research capabilities, as it incorporates the application of antimicrobial resistance detection

Currently, we have a Phoenix M50 in JTF-B but out of service we need to replace it to continue identifying microorganisms. This equipment, acquired 8 years ago, now needs expensive repairs and pieces to be replaced, making it increasingly difficult to continue working the workload.

Conclusion: Acquiring this system will keep NAMRU South at the forefront of research, aligning with one of the institution's key objectives.”
