Protecting Highway 108's Communities, Economies, and Watersheds (SNC1837)

The Sierra Nevada Conservancy is providing funding to Tuolumne County to collaborate with the Stanislaus National Forest on the Protecting Highway 108's Communities, Economies, and Watersheds project. This initiative aims to implement fuel breaks across 280 to 406 acres in eastern Tuolumne County to safeguard local infrastructure and communities from catastrophic wildfires. The work involves roadside thinning of ground and ladder fuels up to 12 inches in diameter using a combination of pruning, hand-thinning, and mechanical mastication. These fuel breaks are designed to facilitate fire-suppression access and serve as critical anchor points for future forest management. This effort is integrated into the broader Social and Ecological Resilience Across the Landscape (SERAL) 2.0 plan, which was developed by the Stanislaus National Forest in partnership with Yosemite Stanislaus Solutions. The project is managed by Tuolumne County with primary coordination provided by the Sierra Nevada Conservancy.
