AI Contract Overview
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke requires a single pulsed infrared laser system operating at 920 nm for neural activity imaging in retinal studies, where visible light would interfere with experimental outcomes. The laser must deliver pulses no longer than 100 femtoseconds, feature integrated beam chirper and acousto-optic modulator components, maintain a peak power of approximately 1.5 milliwatts, and support variable repetition rates. It must be compatible with an existing LSM 510 microscope through its infrared access port, enabling simultaneous infrared scanning and visible-light retinal stimulation. One system is to be delivered and installed at the NINDS facility in Bethesda, Maryland, with the contractor responsible for standard installation support and software configuration. Additional training, if needed, must be coordinated directly with the laboratory staff. The acquisition is unrestricted, with no set-aside provisions, and uses NAICS code 334516. The solicitation is open for responses until July 6, 2026, with the award likely based on the Lowest Price Technically Acceptable approach, given that all listed technical specifications are mandatory and no weighting or cost evaluation criteria are detailed. No formal contract clauses, packaging requirements, payment instructions, or administrative contacts are provided in the presolicitation, and the full solicitation package may contain additional submission directives not yet disclosed.

Full Description
Requirements
Background:
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Synaptic Physiology Section (SPS) needs a pulsed 920 nm laser for studying neural processing in the retina. The program area cannot use visible lasers for experiments because they activate the retinal photoreceptors directly. The current preexisting LSM 510 only has visible lasers, but has an access port for piping in a pulsed infrared laser. The program area needs to be able to scan for neural activity with the pulsed IR laser while stimulating the retina with visible movies projected through microscope’s condenser.
Special Order Requirements:
The following product features/characteristics are required:
- Pulses ≤100 fs
- Integrated beam chirper
- Integrated AOM
- Peak power: ~1.5 mW
- Variable repetition rate
- Single wavelength pulsed infrared laser, 920 nm
- 1 laser delivered and installed
Training:
The contractor shall provide any standard installation support and software configuration assistance necessary to ensure successful implementation of the hardware.
Additional training, if required, shall be coordinated with the NINDS SPS.
