The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is procuring lampricides from the Great Lakes Fishery Commission to manage lamprey populations in the Finger Lakes region, specifically targeting Cayuga and Seneca Lakes. These pesticides are critical for controlling juvenile sea lampreys, which pose a significant threat to the local fishery, as a single lamprey can kill approximately 50 pounds of fish, including valuable trout and salmon species. The contract is awarded as a sole-source procurement to the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, emphasizing the specialized nature of the supplier and the importance of this specific product for the region's ecological and economic health. The agreement is set for a one-year term, with the solicitation posted on February 7, 2024, and responses due by February 14, 2024. This procurement underscores the state's commitment to maintaining the health of its freshwater ecosystems and fisheries by preventing lamprey infestations that could severely impact fish populations and recreational fishing industries. The contract details, including the point of contact for inquiries, are managed through the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, with the project focusing on the Finger Lakes area, a vital region for both ecological balance and local recreation. The procurement process is streamlined due to the single-source exemption, ensuring timely and effective delivery of the lampricides necessary for ongoing fishery management efforts.
