The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Research and Development, Regional Procurement Office East in Pittsburgh, PA plans to negotiate a sole source contract with Akesogen, Inc., located in Norcross, GA, to provide ongoing DNA quality assessments and reports for approval prior to genotyping veterans’ samples using Human Exome Chips on Illumina or Affymetrix platforms. This work supports a large, ongoing VA medical study involving the genotyping of over 700,000 samples from veterans, with data already utilized by more than 31 research teams studying a wide range of conditions such as PTSD, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, schizophrenia, and more. The exome chips must contain between 600,000 and 1 million markers, including content from the Exome Chip Design Consortium, tag SNPs from GWAS hits, ancestry markers, and VA-defined custom content targeting diseases and populations relevant to veterans. Key requirements include maintaining continuity with existing DNA quality control and genotyping protocols, demonstrating capacity to process up to 5,000 samples per month with high accuracy and reproducibility, and adhering strictly to established quality assurance metrics without deviation unless approved by the VA project manager. The contractor must have facilities in the continental U.S. capable of producing or purchasing the required genotyping chips and providing secure sample tracking with barcoding, thorough documentation, and audit trails. Staff qualifications include experience in high-throughput assays, bioinformatics for custom chip content design, and compliance with VA IT security and background checks. Although the sole source justification is based on the uniqueness of Akesogen’s capabilities, other interested qualified sources may submit capability statements for consideration by the specified deadline.
