The contract involves relocating three existing radio systems currently situated at Hog Range Butte within the Yakima Training Center (YTC) to two off-installation sites. The newly designed system must ensure automatic switch-over between repeaters for safety purposes, covering approximately 500 square miles of YTC, which presents significant topographical challenges due to four major ridges and elevations ranging from 1,300 to 5,000 feet above ground level. The primary goal is to enhance handheld radio coverage from the current 65-70% to at least 95%, providing a reliable safety net for both range control and fire department operations. The contractor is responsible for designing, furnishing, installing, and guaranteeing the complete radio system, which must comply with narrowbanding mandates and be Project 25 compliant as required by Department of Defense policies. This upgrade aims to significantly improve communication capabilities across the entire training center and ensure operational readiness and safety. The solicitation for this project was scheduled to open on September 25, 2002, under the Department of Defense through the W6QM MICC at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.
