NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center has a contract with the University of Arizona aimed at advancing scientific instrumentation for the James Webb Space Telescope, specifically targeting near-infrared imaging capabilities. The contract, originally awarded in 2002, is being modified to incorporate American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds to support critical development and testing tasks through September 30, 2009. These tasks include the design and development of the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) instrument, along with associated components such as bonded optical mounts, the Short Wave Engineering Test Unit, optical assemblies, brassboard integration, and initial reliability testing. The effort focuses on completing essential stages of the NIRCam instrument to ensure it meets performance requirements for the telescope's imaging goals. An Ombudsman has been assigned to oversee the process, ensuring compliance and addressing any concerns related to the contract modifications and funding use. This contract exemplifies NASA's commitment to leveraging recovery funds to advance key scientific technologies crucial for the success of upcoming space exploration missions.
