This cost-reimbursement contract modification, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, tasks Sandia Corporation with research and development for Enhanced Geothermal Systems under the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. The scope of work includes testing supercritical fluids in a pilot-scale Brayton cycle, developing high-temperature data loggers using silicon on insulator and silicon carbide technologies, and creating a drilling system utilizing pneumatic down the hole hammer bits and polycrystalline diamond company bits. Due to the inherent uncertainties regarding the nature and duration of the technical performance, the project is managed as a cost-reimbursement action rather than a fixed-price award. The work is performed at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, leveraging the organization's specialized expertise in energy efficiency and renewable energy systems as outlined in their prime management and operating contract.

RECOVERY ACTION. FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY. DUNS 007113228. The modification addresses the following work: These funds will be used for: 1) test supercritical fluids in a pilot-scale Brayton cycle and evaluate the performance of the working fluids; 2) to design, develop and field test highly integrated, high temperature data loggers using silicon on insulator and silicon carbide technologies; 3) and to develop a drilling system based upon pneumatic down the hole hammer bits and polycrystalline diamond company bits. The action is other than fixed price because work assigned to the Sandia Corporation, through the issuance of Work Authorizations (WA), is pursuant to the terms and conditions of their prime management and operating contract awarded under as a cost reimbursement type contract due to the uncertainties in contract performance. Cost cannot be estimated with sufficient accuracy to use any type of fixed price contract as the exact nature and duration of the work is uncertain. The use of a separate fixed price award to Sandia Corporation for this WA is inappropriate because the WA is issued under an existing cost reimbursable contract. Sandia was selected by the Department of Energy to participate in this American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) work due to the expertise at Sandia National Laboratories in the subject matter. This work falls within the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, which is covered by the prime contract Statement of Work, paragraph 3.3, entitled "Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy." Paragraph 3.3 states, "The Contractor shall provide research, design and manufacturing capabilities for solar electric technologies (solar thermal and photovoltaic), wind energy, geothermal energy systems, industrial and transportation applications, fossil energy programs, electric power systems, hydrogen power technologies and battery systems for utilities and transportation." NOTE: This action is awarded under prime contract modification no. 392 that recognizes Work Authorization no. GT-100003-20685-10 issued under Management Operating Contract number DE-AC04-94AL85000. This action is funded by Recovery Act dollars.
