Atomically Precise Molecules (APM)
Solicitation # DARPA-PS-26-141
The Atomically Precise Molecules (APM) program, solicitation DARPA-PS-26-141, is a 36-month initiative by the DARPA Multi X Office seeking innovative synthesis techniques for programmable precision polymers (PPPs) and nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. The program aims to develop scalable materials with strictly controlled monomer sequences and compositions, culminating in a prototype NLO material integrated into a government-provided electro-optic modulator capable of achieving greater than 1THz modulation. The effort is structured in two phases, with Phase I lasting 12 months and focusing on synthesis capabilities. Research limited to inorganic materials or incremental improvements to existing state-of-the-art practices is specifically excluded. Awards will be issued as Other Transaction for Prototype Agreements, with payments processed through the Wide Area Workflow system based on a schedule of milestones. Proposals are due by December 18, 2026, via the Broad Agency Announcement Tool and must include technical, management, and pricing volumes. Eligibility is restricted to U.S. organizations, and all performers must comply with CMMC Level 2 self-certification and NIST SP 800-171 standards for safeguarding Controlled Unclassified Information. Evaluation will be based on technical approach, relevance to the DARPA mission, budget realism, and the capability to transition the technology to military or commercial sectors.

AI Contract Overview

The contract involves the procurement of a sophisticated research ultrasound system designed for ultrasound imaging method development and specialized biomedical research. The system must operate across a broad frequency range from 1 MHz to at least 60 MHz and feature customizable, independent control of each channel, including amplitude, delay, frequency, and other parameters, supporting complex beamforming strategies. It should facilitate high-speed data acquisition and processing, enabling ultra-high frame rate imaging with capabilities of over 5000 frames per second, and support multiple imaging modes such as B-mode, shear wave elastography, and Doppler. The system must also include arbitrary waveform generation, high-power transmit capabilities with rapid voltage transitions, and multi-system synchronization for advanced volumetric or multi-angle imaging. Additional features include built-in simulation tools, MATLAB integration, universal transducer adapters for quick probe changes, and upgrade options for future enhancements. The system is intended for use at Binghamton University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, with resources for training and technical support provided, and the purchase is a one-time acquisition with a budget range between 500,000 and 1.5 million dollars. The deadline for responses is March 24, 2025.

The ultrasound instrument will be used for ultrasound imaging method development and specialized biomedical research. The instrument needs to generate and receive broadband ultrasound waves and offers individual channel control for advanced beamforming. The instrument will support fast ultrasound image reconstruction and multiple imaging modes including B-mode, shear wave elastography (high output power needed), and Doppler. Also, the instrument will have the capability of performing flexible waveform generation for advanced acoustic based object control (e.g., cell manipulation for biomedical research).   Capabilities and specifications: Broad operating frequency range Frequency ranges from 1 MHz to at least 60 MHz. Customizable individual channel control and acquisition Independent per-channel amplitude (apodization), delay (phase), frequency, pulse duty cycle, polarity, and burst length control. Supports complex beamforming strategies. System requires high delay resolution (2 ns, 500 MHz) and dynamic amplitude range (16-bit digital control). Access raw rf data for customized imaging algorithms (e.g., shear wave reconstruction). High ultrasound signal sampling rate (≥250MHz). Rapid interleaving processing of focused ray lines, transmit pulse, plane wave, etc. Programmable high-power transmit Pulse voltage can reach at least 190 volts peak-to-peak. Fast voltage transition time (at least 5 ns). Arbitrary waveform generation Built-in software to create high-fidelity analog acoustic waveforms. Include tri-state pulser. Ultra-high frame rate imaging Large channel memory (256 mb) and data transfer speeds of at least 6 GB/s. Rapid beamforming and reconstruction capability (>5000 frames per second). Multi-system synchronization Capability to synchronize (with 2 ns precision) multiple units for multi-channel data acquisition. Synchronize with external devices (programmable input/output triggers). Facilitates volumetric imaging or simultaneous multi-angle scanning for complex particle manipulation studies. Built-in simulation & development tools Offline simulator to test experimental scripts for B-mode, doppler, or elastography. Contain MATLAB integration including example scrips for different imaging techniques (B-mode, ultrafast, shear wave, and doppler). Universal transducer adapters (UTAs) Quick transducer swaps for b-mode, doppler, and specialized arrays (adapter fits different ultrasound probes including linear, curved, and phase array). Sparse array, ring array, matrix array. Allow at least 64 individual elements to control. System size Compact ultrasound system, weight System upgrade System can be upgraded to support additional capabilities and features (e.g., more controllable elements, higher output power, etc.). Resources Online training resources available for new users. Available technical support for scripting question and hardware maintenance.
