The State of Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is soliciting letters of interest for the disposition of the M/V Matanuska. The state is seeking qualified parties to purchase, acquire, preserve, or repurpose the vessel in a manner that honors its historical significance and provides ongoing public value. Preferred concepts include adaptive reuse for maritime training, tourism, education, museum or heritage preservation, research platforms, or other innovative community and cultural uses. While proposals for scrapping or dismantling may be submitted, the state will evaluate all responses based on policy, operational, and public interest considerations, including adherence to the AMHS Ship Recycling Plan and the Hong Kong International Convention for environmentally sound disposal. Comprehensive technical documentation is available to interested parties, including a 2023 fleet condition survey assessing structural and mechanical integrity, a repowering trim and stability booklet, and detailed vessel specification tables. Due to the age and nature of the vessel, the state has provided an Asbestos Management Plan and a Hazardous Building Materials Survey identifying asbestos-containing materials to guide any future renovation or demolition. All inquiries and submissions must be directed to Brandy Halverson by April 23, 2026, at 2:00pm Alaska Standard Time. This request for information does not obligate the state to enter into a contract or conduct a formal solicitation.
