This contract involves the procurement and installation of a modular, flexible electrode calendering machine designed for lithium-ion battery manufacturing. The equipment will process coated electrode sheets by unwinding, compressing through precisely controlled calendering rolls, and rewinding, ensuring uniform thickness and enhanced material density to optimize battery performance and longevity. The machine will be equipped with advanced quality control systems, including web alignment, thickness measurement, and defect detection, with data logging capabilities for process monitoring and traceability. The design emphasizes future upgradeability to accommodate technological advancements, and the project must be completed with the machine fully operational and User Acceptance Tested by the specified deadline to maintain the integrity of the production schedule. The contract is awarded by the Research Foundation of the State University of New York, located in Broome County, NY, with a project timeline culminating in a delivery deadline of April 22, 2025. The scope emphasizes seamless integration into existing manufacturing workflows, critical for downstream processes such as slitting and cell assembly. The procurement is not set aside for minority, women, or service-disabled veteran-owned businesses, and the contract size ranges from $500,000 to $2 million. The primary point of contact is Paul Malliband, the Executive Director of Battery-NY, who oversees the project’s execution and ensures adherence to the technical and schedule requirements.

Full Description

Battery electrode calendering is a crucial step in the manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries. It involves compressing and densifying the coated electrode materials (such as cathodes and anodes) to achieve a uniform thickness, improve material density, and enhance electrochemical performance. This process helps ensure optimal contact between active materials and current collectors, leading to better battery efficiency and lifespan.Battery-NY is seeking equipment to provide a flexible and modular anode and cathode electrode calendering capability within a single machine. The electrode sheet, wound on a reel from the previous coating process, is unwound and passed through a set of calendering rolls that apply pressure to compress the coated material. The roller gap, speed, and pressure are precisely controlled to achieve the desired thickness and density. The calendered electrode is then rewound onto a reel before being fed to the next process (slitting or cell assembly). The modular design will permit easy upgrades in the future as new technologies and processes are developed. The machine will include a suite of quality control equipment (web alignment, thickness measurement, defect detection, etc.) and will log key process and quality data to a data storage system via an IT interface. Incoming materials are scanned, and outgoing materials receive a unique identifier for tracking and tracing purposes. The main requirements are summarized in the following sections. The machine must be fully installed and operational, with the UAT (User Acceptance Test) completed on or before the date specified in Section 1. This will facilitate the seamless completion of all upstream and downstream process activities within the planned timeframe, ensuring the provision of necessary materials for subsequent activities. For instance, calendered electrodes are required to test the slitting machine and cell assembly lines. Any project delays must be avoided, as they will impact downstream processes and, ultimately, the final project completion date.Note: Area Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Set Aside: No Minority Owned Sub-Contracting Goal: 0% Women Owned Sub-Contracting Goal: 0% Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business Contracting Goal: 0% Disadvantaged Owned Sub-Contracting Goal: 0% Due date:04/22/2025 5:00 PM Bidder’s questions received by: 8 April 2025 by 17:00 EST Contract term: Contract end upon delivery County(ies): Broome Location: 10 Gannett Drive Johnson City, NY 13790 Business entities awarded an identical or substantially similar procurement contract within the past five years: N/A
