Sonoma County General Plan Update (Draft GP 2020)

The County of Sonoma has implemented the 2025 Safety Element Update as a modification to the Sonoma County General Plan 2020. Approved by the Board of Supervisors on August 12, 2025, this update repeals the existing Public Safety Element to ensure compliance with California state law, specifically Government Code Sections 65302(g) and 65302.15. The update focuses on protecting the community from unreasonable risks associated with flooding, wildland and urban fires, and seismic and geologic hazards such as ground shaking and landslides. Additionally, the project incorporates climate adaptation and resilience policies to address climate vulnerabilities as mandated by Senate Bill 379. To facilitate this update, the County prepared an Addendum to the General Plan 2020 Environmental Impact Report (EIR). This Addendum concluded that the Safety Element Update does not trigger new significant environmental impacts, meaning no additional environmental review or new mitigation measures were required beyond those already adopted in the original 2008 General Plan 2020 EIR. The project also requires coordination with the federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to enroll in the Wireless Priority Service and the Government Emergency Telecommunications Service. Administrative filing fees for the environmental documents totaled 3,018.75 dollars, paid to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
