The Mosaic Project

The Mosaic Project is a forecast for the development of the Outdoor Project Camp, an educational facility in unincorporated Alameda County, California. The project's mission is to unite children of diverse backgrounds through a multi-day nature-oriented experience focused on community building and peacemaking. The scope of work involves demolishing a 7,500-square-foot garage and constructing several new facilities on a 2-acre area, including twelve 400-square-foot camping cabins, an 8,500-square-foot central meeting and dining hall, a 1,025-square-foot restroom and shower building, and a 2,600-square-foot two-story staff housing building. The project also includes the installation of sewer infrastructure with an on-site septic tank and leach field, while continuing to utilize an existing caretaker's unit and groundwater wells. The project is subject to extensive environmental and regulatory oversight, including compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act and the Williamson Act for land conservation. Technical requirements include comprehensive geotechnical engineering investigations to assess seismic hazards and soil stability, as well as detailed water and wastewater system reports for a public water system. The site features innovative water management solutions, such as rainwater harvesting and greywater reuse. Support for the project has been documented from the Castro Valley Unified School District, and the project has undergone a Final Environmental Impact Report process to mitigate impacts on biological resources and fish and wildlife. Operational safety is managed through comprehensive guidelines covering emergency preparedness, first aid, and environmental stewardship.
