AI Contract Overview

The contract pertains to the procurement of the Airnesco Bore Cleaning System designed for the M777A2 Howitzer, replacing the current manual cleaning method that requires five Marines using multiple staff poles and a large bore brush to clean the Howitzer tube. The new system uses a pneumatic pump to automate the cleaning process, allowing a single Marine to operate the bore brush simply by turning on the system. This innovation reduces the physical effort required and provides a higher cleaning effectiveness than the traditional method. The contract includes various line items such as a Pelican case for storage, hoses, valves, filters, protective shrouds, and different types of brushes and accessories specific to the caliber of the Howitzer. The acquisition is managed by the Department of Defense’s Commanding General office located at Camp Pendleton, CA, under solicitation number M0068112T0113, with coverage consistent with federal acquisition regulations and defense supplements. The NAICS code associated with this contract falls under 811310, reflecting equipment maintenance services. The contract includes a sole source justification, suggesting that the Airnesco Bore Cleaning System is a singular solution for this requirement, emphasizing improved operational efficiency and reduced manpower needs for cleaning artillery tubes.

Full Description

The M777A2 Howitzer is currently cleaned by five Marines attaching six staff poles together with a large bore brush on the end. The Marines will push and pull the bore brush in the Howitzer tube until it reaches the opposite end. This process is repeated several times to properly clean the inside bore of the tube. However, with the Airnesco Bore Cleaning System, one Marine can put the system bore brush in the Howitzer tube and simply turn it on. The pneumatic pump, which is easily operated, pushes the bore brush to the end of the Howitzer tube leaving it completely clean. Tests have shown the bore cleaning system to be less strenuous on the Marines while providing a higher level of cleanliness than the current method.
