NHTSA’s mission is to save lives, prevent injuries and reduce traffic-related health care and other economic costs. The agency develops, promotes and implements effective educational, engineering and enforcement programs with the goal of ending preventable tragedies and reducing economic costs associated with vehicle use and highway travel. NHTSA’s NDR&TR support for States centers on six traffic records data systems (Crash, Driver, Vehicle, Roadway, Citation/Adjudication, Injury Surveillance). NHTSA commissioned the development of the Traffic Records Improvement Program Reporting System (TRIPRS) in 2010 to monitor and track the advances in the States’ Traffic Safety Information Systems technology and practices. TRIPRS allows the collection and organization of data and currently houses State documents and information collected in the normal operations of the State Traffic Records Assessment Program (STRAP); the Safety Program Assessment (SPA) module that currently includes assessments for pedestrian and bicycle safety, impaired driving, and occupant protection programs; the Data Mapping module; and the State Electronic Data Collection grant application and monitoring module.
