UC Social Sciences Institute

The University of California, Berkeley is soliciting professional design services for the establishment of a new Social Sciences Institute within the Department of Political Science. The project involves the design of 3,000 to 6,000 square feet of off-campus commercial space, which must integrate site security and exhibit design for a public-facing component. Additionally, the scope may include the renovation of a 900 square foot office suite on the 8th floor of the social sciences building. The selected prime consultant will be responsible for the full project lifecycle, including schematic design, design development, construction documents, bidding, and construction administration. The total project budget is estimated at 4 million dollars, with professional fees to be negotiated upon selection. The project must adhere to strict regulatory and institutional standards, including the University of California Sustainable Practices Policy, the 2021 Seismic Safety Policy, and the 2025 Carbon Neutrality Planning Framework. The design phase is anticipated to last six months following the contract award, with the final consultant selection expected in early Fall 2026. Evaluation criteria focus on design excellence, relevant experience in high-end commercial interiors and exhibit design, and the ability to deliver projects on compressed schedules and budgets. The successful firm will be required to sign the UC Berkeley Executive Design Professional Agreement and provide evidence of an equal employment opportunity policy.
