The Conservation and Protection (C&P) branch of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) promotes and maintains compliance with legislation, regulations, policies, and management measures implemented to achieve the conservation and sustainable use of Canada’s aquatic resources, and the protection of species at risk, fish habitat, and oceans. It works in collaboration with domestic partners including government agencies, industry groups, First Nations communities, and regional fisheries management organizations. C&P promotes compliance through education and shared stewardship initiatives, conducts monitoring and surveillance activities, and manages major cases and special investigations. C&P also plays a role in the protection of Canadian sovereignty and national security by identifying potential marine security threats, representing Canada's aquatic interests in domestic and international forums, and leading the implementation of Canada's compliance and enforcement obligations under various international agreements and treaties.
