Wrights Lake Forest Health and Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project

The Wrights Lake Forest Health and Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project is a forecast initiative led by the Georgetown Divide Resource Conservation District and the USDA Forest Service, Pacific Ranger District, Eldorado National Forest. Located in the Sierra Nevada mountains within the greater Wrights Lake area, the project aims to increase wildfire resilience across approximately 1,731 acres. The primary scope of work involves the removal or modification of surface and ladder fuels and the establishment of canopy separation within the dominant overstory. These objectives will be achieved through mechanical treatments and prescribed fire, focusing on areas with high fuel load conditions that fall outside existing special use authorities. The project includes ongoing maintenance to manage surface fuel loading and canopy separation throughout its lifecycle. Additional deliverables involve the reduction or elimination of hazard trees, maintenance of existing roads, and the improvement of ingress and egress for more effective fire suppression. Compliance is governed by the Eldorado National Forest LRMP and the Sierra Nevada Forest Plan Amendment, with specific protections for riparian sites and historic properties. Safety requirements mandate the use of personal protective equipment for workers and clear signage and colorant marking to mitigate risks to the public. The project is exempt from CEQA as it has been reviewed under NEPA, with the associated Environmental Assessment and Decision Notice signed in October 2024.
