Hopland Station Fuel Reduction Project

The project aims to mitigate wildfire risk across approximately eight acres of state-owned land surrounding the CAL FIRE Hopland Fire Station in Mendocino County, situated along Highway 101 north of the town of Hopland. The area consists of an oak woodland hardwood forest with scattered madrone, some pine trees, grassy clearings, and shrubs, placing the station and its staff housing directly within a wildland-urban interface. Vegetation management is essential to reduce flammable materials near buildings and eliminate hazardous trees that could threaten structures or human safety. Activities include fuel reduction using hand crews, chainsaws, pole saws, chippers, and heavy equipment, along with controlled pile and broadcast burning. Trees up to 12 inches in diameter may be removed to enhance forest health and spacing, while larger trees will be pruned to achieve up to 14 feet of vertical clearance. Hazard trees, snags, and dead or dying trees of any size will be removed, with debris either bucked and burned in piles or left in place as needed. Beyond immediate fire risk reduction, the project supports operational training for CAL FIRE personnel by providing real-world scenarios for chainsaw operations, live fire deployment, fire line construction, and mop-up procedures. The work is designed as a long-term strategy to maintain a defensible space and reduce accumulated fuels sustainably over time. All activities are coordinated to balance ecological health with community safety, ensuring that the fire station remains a resilient operational hub amid a high-risk environment.
