Z--REABILITATE CAMP MUIR HISTORIC PUBLIC SHELTER located at 10,000 foot elevation on Mount Rainier, Pierce County, Washington.

The Department of the Interior, through the National Park Service at Mount Rainier National Park, plans to negotiate and award a sole source construction contract to Sahale, LLC for rehabilitating the Public Shelter at Camp Muir, located at 10,000 feet elevation. The unique challenges of this project stem from the remote and difficult access to Camp Muir, which requires either a helicopter or a strenuous five-mile hike gaining 5,000 feet, including traversing a permanent snowfield. Sahale, LLC is specifically chosen for their expertise in remote area construction and their familiarity with helicopter logistics, such as transporting materials and placing concrete using helicopter bucket drops. The contractor and crew have sufficient mountain climbing and camping experience to sustain work at high altitude for extended periods. The primary focus of the contract is to construct a new, engineer-certified roof structure capable of supporting the significant snow loads and occasional live loads typical at Camp Muir, along with incorporating effective lightning protection. Additional rehabilitation tasks include repairing windows and doors, replacing missing mortar in the masonry, restoring rafter ends, fixing cracks in interior mortar/plaster veneer, and removing incompatible plywood from the interior. Sahale, LLC’s proven experience in undertaking projects in remote and environmentally sensitive areas of the park and forest service underscores the rationale for the sole source selection, authorized under the applicable federal acquisition regulations and statutes. The contract is managed by the Department of the Interior’s Dsc Contracting Services Division located in Denver, Colorado.
