The Department of Veterans Affairs, Network Contracting Office 6, is conducting market research to determine the availability of qualified sources capable of supplying blood and blood products to the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, North Carolina, and the W.G. (Bill) Hefner Salisbury VA Medical Center in Salisbury, North Carolina. The agency is considering a sole source award to The American Red Cross due to its proven capability to meet the critical, time-sensitive demands of these level 1a and 1b facilities, including the ability to deliver FDA-approved blood products with at least three scheduled deliveries per week and 24/7 STAT response capability for emergencies. The Red Cross is also uniquely positioned to serve as a reference laboratory for specimens beyond the scope of the medical centers.
